Research Interests

Hi, my name is Auzi Asfarian, and I am a computer science lecturer at IPB University, one of the best public universities in Indonesia (QS Rank #399).

My research explores how digital technologies can be designed to support engagement with nature and cultural communities. While technology increasingly mediates these experiences, many existing tools are not designed to foster meaningful or respectful interactions. I aim to design digital interventions that enhance visitors’ understanding and appreciation of both natural and cultural contexts, when technology can enrich experiences, and when minimal or no intervention is preferable.

As a lecturer at IPB University, I have led and contributed to projects at the intersection of technology, culture, and rural agricultural communities. My work has included co-designing immersive platforms for cultural walking tours and ecotourism visits, as well as digital interventions to promote responsible consumption. I have transformed fieldwork insights and visual data into immersive learning materials for university courses and proposed a workflow to scale this process from fieldwork to classroom implementation. These projects have resulted in publications in refereed journals and at conferences. Beyond teaching and research, I also volunteer in both the ACM SIGCHI Indonesia Chapter and the IEEE Indonesia Section to shape Indonesian research and innovation ecosystems. I have led initiatives to engage pre-university students in STEM, provide community services, and organize scientific conferences in various capacities.

My PhD research expands my work into the context of Indigenous Indonesian communities, aiming to amplify their voices in the design of digital technologies. I co-design with communities that have cultural restrictions on technology use, developing solutions that enable visitors to engage in tourism and cultural activities in ways that are both meaningful and culturally respectful.

Outside my works, I enjoy digital and film photography, nature immersion through walking or biking, and coffee making.
